Dysfunctional families can be fun to watch — either because they remind us of or make us feel better about the foibles of our own families — but the Bluth family in Arrested Development takes dysfunctional to a whole new level and we're all the happier for it. Presented in a very stylistic mock documentary ('mockumentary') format, the show exposes the improprieties of a previously wealthy family on the brink of becoming destitute. This comedy is multi-layered, with many interesting parodying references to itself, other shows and the TV industry in general. But even if you don't necessarily get the subtler jokes, just the character-driven plotline is enough to make for an arresting series.

Season one starts off with the patriarch of the Bluth family getting imprisoned for fraud and embezzlement, after which his middle son Michael picks up the responsibility of heading the Bluth Company while struggling to curb the excessive and capricious tendencies of his mother and siblings. The title Arrested Development seems to refer to the individual members of the Bluth family's failure to mature, with the exception of Michael, as a result of years of living lavish and sheltered lives.

Arrested Development was created by Mitchell Hurwitz (The Ellen Show and The Golden Girls) in 2002 from an original concept by Ron Howard to do a single-camera reality-TV-style comedy. Stylistic elements like flashbacks, still photos, and webcam video clips are added to support the comedic narrative. Ron Howard also lends his voice as the narrator (but does it un-credited), and his own commentary adds another distinct dimension to the sitcom.  Earning multiple praises from critics, but not as much in terms of US TV ratings, Arrested Development lasted three seasons and ended with a four-episode finale in February 2006.  Hurwitz and Howard are joined by Brian Grazer and David Nevins as executive producers of the show.

Jason Bateman plays Michael Bluth, who - being the only sensible person in his family - is burdened by the responsibilities that the rest of them can’t handle. While he tries to keep them all afloat from the crisis created by their father, George Sr. (played by Jeffrey Tambor), and various mishaps of their own doing, he also has to balance being a single-parent to his son George Michael. George Michael is portrayed by Michael Cera as a responsible teenager trying to live up to his father's expectations but finds himself secretly attracted to his more rebellious cousin Maeby (Alia Shawkat).

Other characters in 'Arrested Development' include the selfish and manipulative matriarch Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walter), Michael's narcissistic but frustrated magician brother GOB (as in the Bible's Job and short for George Oscar Bluth, played by Will Arnett), his overly dependent and unstable younger brother Buster (Tony Hale), and his attention-hungry and materialistic twin sister Lindsay (Portia de Rossi) who later turns out to be adopted. They are joined by David Cross, who plays Lindsay's husband Tobias Fünke, a discredited psychiatrist and aspiring actor.

Jen Chaney of the Washington Post calls the actors of Arrested Development a "stellar ensemble cast" and the episodes of the second season "gleefully weird." Rob Owen of the Post-Gazette, meanwhile, writes that the series is "more layered, more densely packed with bits of comedy than just about any other show on TV."
